Embracing the Pacific Northwest Spring: Tips for Staying Active Despite the Weather

Hey there, ladies! It's Emily from Leggy Mama, and today we're going to talk about a topic that's all too familiar for those of us living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest: springtime weather. While our friends in SoCal and Florida might enjoy warm, sunny days, we know spring here can be wet and unpredictable. I always hear the saying, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes.” Another one that gets thrown around often is, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear.

But I'm here to share a few creative tips for staying active and motivated despite the drizzle or the occasional snow. Yeah, I said snow. I still have some in my backyard from November, if you can believe it!

  1. Bring Your Workouts Indoors
When the weather isn't cooperating, don't let it dampen your spirits. Instead, move your workouts indoors! We’re probably tired of being inside and suffering from cabin fever, but consistency with our workouts is important. You can do plenty of fun and effective exercise routines in the comfort of your own home. From high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to dance-inspired cardio, you'll find plenty of options that suit your fitness level and preferences. Plus, with tons of online classes and apps available, there's no shortage of resources to keep you motivated.

My daily go-to is using the Apple Fitness App alongside my Apple Watch. Most of the time, I do a HIIT session. If I’m tired, I will do a core or pilates workout instead. I’m usually up before the rest of my family, and I can get a solid 20 to 30-minute workout in to kickstart my day. I’m not a gym rat or fitness junkie. To be honest, I just don’t have the time. I’m busy with many lifeforms pulling at me ALL THE TIME. My workout time in the morning grounds me. I need it!

  2. Embrace the Elements with the Right Gear
Invest in high-quality weather-resistant gear if you're determined to stay active outdoors. A good rain jacket, moisture wicking leggings, and waterproof shoes are essential for braving those wet Pacific Northwest spring days. Don't forget a trusty umbrella or a waterproof hat to keep your head dry, too. You'll feel more prepared and confident to face the elements with the right gear. As the Navy SEALS would say, “Embrace the Suck.”

  3. Discover Indoor Fitness Classes
Take advantage of local gyms and studios that offer indoor fitness classes. From spinning and Pilates to barre and kickboxing, there's something for everyone. Not only will these classes provide a fun and challenging workout, but they're also a great opportunity to connect with other ladies in your community. They also open us up to new ideas and exercise routines that we otherwise may not have thought of in the confines of our homes.

  4. Create an At-Home Gym
If you're short on time or prefer to exercise at home, consider setting up a mini gym space in your house. With just a few essential pieces of equipment, like resistance bands, dumbbells, and a yoga mat, you can create a versatile workout area perfect for squeezing in a quick sweat session between work and family responsibilities.

This is exactly what I have done in my home. My space is shared with everyone else, and there isn’t anything special about it. The most important part about the space is my consistency in being there to work out! I use a yoga mat and lightweight dumbbells more than anything else.

  5. Get Creative with Outdoor Spaces
When the rain lets up, seize the opportunity to explore the great outdoors. Pacific Northwest spring can be magical, with blossoming flowers and lush greenery, so why not take advantage of it? Try hiking, trail running, or walking in your local park. By getting creative with outdoor spaces, you'll be able to enjoy the beauty of the season while staying active.

Walking is such an underrated exercise. I went for a 3+ mile walk last week around my neighborhood. The sun was shining, and everyone was out soaking it in. My legs and booty were sore when I got home. Seriously. Walking also allows you to take in the scenery, which we have plenty of here in the PNW. Take it all in, it’s good for you.

  6. Stay Social and Accountable
Staying motivated can be a challenge when the weather is gloomy. That's why it's essential to surround yourself with a support system of like-minded friends and family. Join a local fitness group or create your workout buddy system to help you stay accountable and make exercise more enjoyable. Find a friend on the same journey as you are, and at the very least, help each other stay accountable weekly.

  7. Embrace a Positive Mindset
Finally, remember that attitude is everything. Embrace the unpredictability of Pacific Northwest spring weather as an opportunity to practice flexibility and resilience. Keep a positive mindset, and remember that every workout counts, no matter how small or unconventional. If you’re short on time one day for your regular workout, do a few sit ups or pushups. Anything! Just stay consistent in showing up to work out. That’s more important than the workout itself. It’s a mindset.

So, let's gear up, get creative, and show Mother Nature that a little rain won't stop us from staying active and enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest spring. Here's to making the most of this season, rain or shine!

With love and a spring in my step,

Emily
